Imagine reading two pages of a book at once — your left eye scanning the left page, your right eye the right — and remembering almost every word for the rest of your life. One man really could do this. His name was Kim Peek, and the film Rain Man was inspired by him.

The short version: Kim Peek was born without the thick bundle of fibres that normally links the two halves of the brain. Doctors expected him to struggle badly. Instead he became a “megasavant,” memorising an estimated 12,000 books — while still needing help to button his shirt. His brain shows how ability and disability can live side by side in the same person.

When Kim was born in 1951, scans revealed something startling. He had agenesis of the corpus callosum.

In plain English — the corpus callosum is a thick cable of nerve fibres that lets the brain’s left and right halves talk to each other. “Agenesis” means it never formed. Kim’s two hemispheres grew up as near-strangers.

Doctors told his parents he would never walk or learn, and suggested he be placed in an institution. They were wrong on almost every count — though not in the way anyone expected.

The memory of a thousand libraries

Kim could read a page in about 8 to 10 seconds and recall roughly 98% of what he read. Some accounts suggest that, with his hemispheres working independently, he could take in both pages of an open book at the same time. Over his life he memorised phone books, calendars, maps, historical dates, classical music, and the plots of thousands of novels.

Not autism — and that matters

Because Rain Man gave its lead character autism, many people assume Kim was autistic. He wasn’t. His profile came from his unusual brain wiring, not from autism. This is an important correction, because it shows that savant syndrome (extraordinary skill alongside serious disability) can arise from several different causes.

In plain English — a savant is someone with a striking “island” of talent that stands far above their other abilities. It is rare, and it reminds us that a single label rarely captures a whole brain.

Why scientists still study him

Kim’s brain challenged a neat assumption: that losing a major connection like the corpus callosum can only cause harm.
