Synesthesia: When People Taste Words and See Music in Colour

For some people the number 7 is lime green — and always has been. Monday might taste faintly of toast. And no, they’re not making it up.

The short version: In synesthesia, the senses cross-wire, so one experience automatically triggers another — letters have colours, music paints shapes, words carry flavours. It’s real, it’s consistent, and it may be far more common than anyone guessed.

Ask a synesthete what colour the letter A is, and they won’t hesitate. It might be red. It’s always been red. Ask again in five years and you’ll get the same answer — which is one of the ways scientists proved this is a genuine perception, not a party trick or an overactive imagination.

In plain English — synesthesia (“joined senses”) is when stimulating one sense automatically fires off another — without any effort or choice. The extra sensation just… arrives.

It comes in many flavours (literally)

There isn’t just one kind. Researchers have catalogued dozens. Here are the crowd favourites:

Roughly 4% of people have some form of it, and it tends to run in families — so there’s a genetic thread. Curiously, it’s more common among artists, writers and musicians.

What’s happening in the brain

The leading idea is cross-activation: in a synesthete’s brain, two regions that normally keep to themselves — say, the area for recognising letters and the area for processing colour, which happen to sit right next to each other — have extra chatter between them. Fire one, and the neighbour lights up too.

We may all start life a little synesthetic as babies, before the brain’s sensory regions fully sort themselves out.

Gift, not glitch

  • Synesthetes often have excellent memories — the extra colour or taste acts like a built-in mnemonic tag.
  • It’s remarkably consistent: the same letter triggers the same colour years apart.
  • Far from a problem, most synesthetes love it and can’t imagine experiencing the world any other way.

So next time someone tells you Tuesday is obviously turquoise, don’t argue. Their brain is simply throwing in a little extra colour — for free.
