Someone next to you is chewing gum. Or slurping soup. Or tapping a pen. To most people it’s mildly annoying at worst. But for you, it triggers a wave of pure rage — your heart races, your muscles tense, and you have to fight the urge to flee or snap. If this sounds familiar, you’re not “too sensitive.” You may have misophonia, and it’s real.
For years, people with misophonia were told to just relax. Then, in 2017, a team at Newcastle University put them in a brain scanner — and found something no one could argue with.
What the brain scan revealed
When people with misophonia heard a trigger sound (like chewing), their emotional smoke alarm lit up far more strongly than in everyone else. Their bodies reacted too — heart rate up, skin sweatier — the same alarm response you’d get facing a real threat. Crucially, neutral sounds (rain) and even generally unpleasant ones (a baby crying) did not cause this. Only the specific triggers did.

Why chewing, of all things?
No one is completely sure, but there are clues. Triggers are almost always sounds made by other people’s bodies — eating, breathing, sniffing. The 2017 team also found unusually strong connections between the sound-and-emotion alarm and the brain’s front regions. In short, in a misophonic brain, certain human sounds seem to get wired directly into the threat system.
It’s not that you hate the person. It’s that your brain has tagged a harmless sound as a genuine emergency.
Misophonia usually begins in childhood or the teenage years, and the triggers are often set off by close family — which can make home life especially hard. It frequently overlaps with anxiety, but it is increasingly recognised as its own condition.
What actually helps
There’s no cure yet, but people do find relief. Common strategies include:
- Sound masking — earplugs, background music, or white noise to soften triggers.
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) — a talking therapy that helps change the automatic panic-and-rage response.
- Openness — simply telling family and coworkers that it’s a real, involuntary reaction, not rudeness.
Understanding misophonia also fits a bigger theme in neuroscience: our senses aren’t neutral recorders — they’re tangled up with emotion.
