You hear four seconds of a pop song in a shop — and eight hours later it’s still looping in your head, uninvited, on repeat. You didn’t choose it. You can’t seem to switch it off. If it’s any comfort, this happens to almost everyone. Scientists even have a name for it: an earworm.

The short version: An earworm is a catchy fragment of music that gets stuck on repeat in your mind. About 90% of people get them at least weekly. They’re a natural quirk of a very musical brain — and there are simple tricks to get rid of one.

Researchers give earworms a more formal name: involuntary musical imagery.

In plain English — “involuntary musical imagery” just means music that plays in your mind without you asking it to. It’s your brain replaying a tune on its own, like a song stuck on loop with no off button.

Why songs get stuck

Earworms usually latch on for a few clear reasons. Studies by researchers like James Kellaris and Vicky Williamson found the tunes that stick tend to be simple, upbeat, and easy to sing — but with one small surprising twist that makes them memorable. And they’re often triggered when your mind is free to wander.

The “cognitive itch”

One popular way to picture an earworm is as a cognitive itch — a mental itch you can’t scratch. A catchy tune leaves a little gap in your memory (your brain wants to complete the loop), and replaying it is the “scratch.” But scratching an itch often makes it worse, which is exactly why the song keeps coming back.

An earworm isn’t a glitch. It’s the sign of a brain that’s brilliant at holding onto music.

Interestingly, songs with words account for the large majority of earworms — roughly three-quarters — while purely instrumental music rarely gets stuck. Men and women get them equally often, though research suggests they may linger a little longer for women.

How to get rid of one

Good news: there are evidence-based tricks to shake a stubborn earworm.

  • Finish the song. Listen to the whole track — completing the loop can close the “itch.”
  • Chew gum. Studies show it interferes with the brain’s ability to “play” the tune.
  • Distract yourself with a puzzle. A crossword or Sudoku — hard enough to occupy your mind, but not so hard you give up.

Earworms are a lovely reminder of how deeply music is wired into us — the same wiring that lets a song give you full-body chills, as we explore in the science of frisson.
