Quick — close your eyes and picture an apple. Got it? Now imagine that when you tried, absolutely nothing showed up. Welcome to aphantasia.

The short version: Some people have no “mind’s eye” at all — they can’t voluntarily picture a face, a beach, or that apple. It’s called aphantasia, it affects a small slice of us, and here’s the twist: most people who have it don’t realise anything is different for years.

For most of us, “imagine an apple” produces a little picture in the head — fuzzy or sharp, but something. For roughly 1 in 25 to 1 in 50 people, that request draws a total blank. They know what an apple is. They can describe it. They just can’t see it on the private screen behind their eyes, because for them, that screen is switched off.

In plain English — your “mind’s eye” is your ability to picture things that aren’t in front of you. Scientists measure it with a questionnaire called the VVIQ. Aphantasia sits at the “I see nothing” end of that scale.

A word that’s only a decade old

Here’s something surprising: this experience only got a name in 2015, when neurologist Adam Zeman and his team coined aphantasia (from the Greek for “without imagination”). Before that, people with it usually assumed “picture it in your mind” was just a figure of speech — a poetic phrase, not a literal thing everyone else could do.

Imagine finding out in your thirties that when other people say they can “see” a loved one’s face with their eyes closed, they mean it literally. That realisation is a rite of passage in the aphantasia community.

It’s a spectrum, not a switch

Mental imagery isn’t simply on or off. It’s a dial that runs from “nothing at all” to “vivid as real life.”

At the far other end sits hyperphantasia — imagery so vivid it can rival actually seeing. Most of us land somewhere in the comfortable middle.

Aphantasia isn’t a disorder or a deficit. It’s a different — and totally functional — way of running a human mind.

So what’s it actually like?

People with aphantasia get on with life just fine. Many are engineers, artists, writers and scientists. A few interesting patterns show up in research:

  • They often have weaker autobiographical memory — recalling their own past feels more like knowing facts than replaying scenes.
  • Some still dream in pictures, even though they can’t conjure images on demand — hinting that voluntary and involuntary imagery use different machinery.
  • Many report a possible upside: disturbing images bother them less, because they can’t vividly replay them.

And you know what the big lesson is? Two people can hear the same three words — “imagine a beach” — and have completely different inner experiences, and never know it. Your normal isn’t automatically everyone’s normal.
