Watch a video of someone’s lips saying “ga,” while the sound playing is actually “ba.” What do you hear? Most people hear a third sound entirely: “da.” Close your eyes and it flips back to “ba.” Open them, and “da” returns. Your ears didn’t change — your eyes did. Welcome to the McGurk effect.

The short version: The McGurk effect is a famous illusion showing that what you see a mouth do can completely override what you actually hear. It proves that hearing isn’t just about your ears — your brain blends sight and sound into a single experience before you’re even aware of it.

The illusion was discovered by accident in 1976 by two psychologists, Harry McGurk and John MacDonald, while studying how babies perceive speech. A technician dubbed the wrong sound onto a video — and the researchers noticed they were hearing something that was on neither the tape nor the soundtrack.

In plain English — this is multisensory integration — a fancy term for the brain quietly merging information from different senses (here, eyes and ears) into one smooth experience, without asking your permission.

How the illusion works

When your ears and eyes disagree, your brain doesn’t just pick one. It tries to find the best fit — a sound that could plausibly match both the audio and the lip movement. Caught between “ba” (what you hear) and “ga” (what you see), the brain settles on a compromise: “da.” In the original experiment, about 98% of adults fell for it.

Why it matters in real life

The McGurk effect isn’t just a party trick. It explains why:

  • You understand people far better face-to-face than on a bad phone line — you’re secretly lip-reading all the time.
  • Poorly dubbed films feel subtly “off” — the lips and sound don’t match, so your brain struggles.
  • Noisy restaurants get easier when you can see the speaker’s mouth.

You don’t hear with your ears. You hear with your whole brain — eyes included.

What makes the effect so unsettling is that knowing about it doesn’t switch it off. Even the scientists who study it still fall for the illusion. That’s because the blending happens automatically, deep below conscious control — your brain has already made up its mind before “you” get a say.

A window into perception

The big lesson is humbling: perception isn’t a faithful recording of the world. It’s your brain’s best guess, stitched together from many senses at once. That same guessing game powers other famous illusions, like the rubber hand illusion, where sight convinces your brain that a fake hand is your own. And it’s why sound can move us so deeply — as in the goosebumps of musical frisson.
