You walk into a room you’ve never visited — and every cell in your body swears you’ve been here before. Same light, same feeling, same everything. So what on earth is going on?

The short version: Déjà vu is that jarring sense that a brand-new moment has already happened. Around two-thirds of people get it. And here’s the reassuring twist — the leading theory says it may be a sign your memory system is working well, not glitching.

Déjà vu (French for “already seen”) is famously slippery to study, because it shows up unannounced and vanishes in seconds. But researchers have learned a lot. It’s most common in younger adults and gradually fades with age. It’s more frequent when you’re tired or stressed. And it lasts only a moment — just long enough to make you say “whoa.”

In plain English — your brain has two different memory tricks: familiarity (“this rings a bell”) and recollection (“and here’s exactly why”). Usually they travel together. Déjà vu is what it feels like when familiarity shows up without its partner.

The leading explanation

Picture walking into a friend’s new flat. You’ve never been — but the layout happens to match your grandmother’s old place: sofa here, window there, hallway just so. Your brain notices the resemblance and fires a “familiar!” signal. But it can’t find the actual memory that explains why. That mismatch — strong familiarity, missing source — is experienced as déjà vu.

Psychologist Anne Cleary tested exactly this. She built scenes in virtual reality that secretly matched the spatial layout of earlier ones. Sure enough, people were far more likely to report déjà vu in those “same shape, different content” rooms — even when they couldn’t consciously spot the resemblance.

The “fact-check” idea

Here’s the part that flips the whole thing on its head. Newer research suggests déjà vu isn’t a memory error at all — it might be the feeling of your brain catching one. Your memory system flags the false familiarity (“wait, I couldn’t actually have been here”), and that little internal conflict is what you consciously feel.

Déjà vu may not be your memory failing — it may be your memory quietly checking its own work.

That would explain a well-known quirk: during déjà vu, people usually know the feeling is false. You don’t truly believe you’ve lived the moment before; you just feel like you have, while some part of you calmly disagrees.

When should you care?

For the vast majority of people, déjà vu is completely harmless — a fun, fleeting hiccup of a healthy brain. (One exception worth knowing: in some forms of temporal-lobe epilepsy, intense, frequent déjà vu can occur just before a seizure, which is actually how scientists first linked the feeling to that brain region.)

  • Déjà vu = familiarity without recollection.
  • It’s common, brief, and more frequent when you’re young or tired.
  • Far from a glitch, it may be a sign your memory’s error-checking is switched on.

So the next time it hits, enjoy it. That eerie shiver is just your brain being a very good, slightly dramatic librarian.
